PILOTS FOR SUSTAINABLE PILOTING, IJMUIDEN
Weather and wind, ships, strong quays, locks, bridges and steel industry smoke. This is the context for the Pilotage Service’s new pilot operating base. Inspired by this environment, a sustainable and energy-generating building has been constructed from sturdy, robust materials. Its location so close to Tatasteel was the inspiration for using corten steel, a determining feature that encircles the first floor of the building.
BARN-STYLE ARCHITECTURE, VOORST
In the countryside around Voorst, close to Zutphen, lies the two centuries old farmstead: ‘‘Bij den Oorsprong’’. This estate is situated on a small elevated stretch of land in the century old flow area of the river IJssel in Gelderland. The direct surroundings are of exquisite beauty: a French orchard, beautiful views and a private little stream.
ALONG THE STREET AND ON THE WATERFRONT, AMSTERDAM
The Kadijken is a slightly disordered, but pleasant, part of east Amsterdam. In 1997 an opportunity passed by when a plot of land came free, a plot in which the two sides have a totally opposite character. One side is located on a narrow city street, de Hoogte Kadijk, with a wide variety of plots and façades. The opposite side is located along the waterside of the Nieuwe Vaart with its old dockyards.
OPEN AND PEACEFUL WORKING, AMSTERDAM
In cooperation with Garritzmann architecten - The project has a wide variety of rooms. The small student accommodations, short-stay-facilities, are plain and finished with a functional touch. The office space is in fact an office landscape wherein two branches of the company are separated through a ‘‘Sliver’’, a curtain made of long thin acrylic slices. We chose to give the whole space a slightly metallic atmosphere. The ancillary functions are designed with a warm and inviting character.
BORING SHELTER BECOMES AWESOME OFFICE, WOERDEN
The GREEP management and organization development company needed new premises and like FARO opted to work in a converted barn.
STUDIO ENRICHES BARNTRADITION, OEKEN
A 150 year old farmhouse located in the rural area between the nature areas of the Veluwe and the IJssel has been renovated and expanded. The new pavilion represents modern rural architecture: it’s simple, practical and eloquent. Traditional romance is strengthened by using black and white. Barns have been painted these colors for centuries.
OLD SHED BECAME TRENDY OFFICE, LISSERBROEK
40.000 fruit trees are surrounding the premises of FARO. Work is been done among apples and pears, in the magnificent rural setting the office moved to from Delft in 1997. The former potato shed from 1930 was refurbished as a state-of-the-art workshop cum office, though retaining its original character and identity.
URBAN COURTYARDS AT DE HALLEN, KWINTIJN PHASE 1 AMSTERDAM
Contracted by Wijnen Projectontwikkeling, FARO has designed approximately 175 homes above a parking garage in the district; the homes will be developed over two levels and within three complexes. A significant proportion of the homes is being purchased by an investor, Altera Vastgoed NV, and a housing corporation, Alliantie.
OFFICES ALONG KAMPERLAAN, HAARLEM
A new office building is being constructed along Kamperlaan in Haarlem. The building is the final missing component of a much larger development on the Maria Stichting’s former hospital grounds. The entire planning area and new office building have been rebuilt on the hospital grounds in extremely high density, in keeping with the area’s urban structure.
